The typical deck here was added decades after the house went up - often by a previous owner - hangs off an old rim joist, and stands on posts that were set straight into the clay. Small back yards under big canopies rarely get sun on the boards, so mildew, rot and soft joist tops are the norm rather than the exception. Leaves and pine needles collect against the house, right on the ledger. Around Grant Park and East Atlanta, carpenter-bee holes in unpainted rails are a regular find.
Work inside the city goes through the City of Atlanta's building office when it needs a permit, and several intown neighbourhoods are historic districts where changes visible from the street can need design review. Rear decks are usually simple on that front, but it is worth confirming before material is ordered.
