The question is always structural: a deck built to carry people and furniture was not necessarily built to carry a roof, and the posts and footings that are fine now may not be once the roof load and wind are added. We check the frame first, reinforce it where needed, and then build the screened structure on top of something that can hold it.
For a good part of the year an Atlanta deck is pleasant right up until the light starts to go, and then the mosquitoes arrive. Screening in the deck you already have is the obvious answer, and it is a very common request around Atlanta. It turns a deck you use for an hour into a room you use all evening, through most of the year.
The catch is that a deck was built to carry people and furniture, not a roof. A roof adds weight on the posts and footings, adds wind load, and has to tie into the house. Posts and footings that are perfectly adequate for an open deck can be undersized once the roof goes on, and a deck that sways a little open will not improve with a roof on top.
So we start where every job starts - underneath. We check the posts, footings, beam and ledger, and price any reinforcement separately so you can see exactly what the existing deck needs. Then the roof framing, the tie-in to the house, the screen panels and the door.
